- Plan terminations.
- $1,700 increases in hospital co-pays.
- $1,500 increases in out of pocket prescription drug costs.
- Hospitals and doctors no longer in network.
- Referrals required to see specialists.
- Elimination of comprehensive dental coverage.
- Premiums on PPOs increased to $100 or more.
These are just some of the negative changes to Medicare Advantage Plans that already occurred for many people in 2026 or will be taking place in 2027.
I predicted years ago these changes were inevitable and I’m predicting more will be coming in 2028 and beyond in the form of higher premiums and out of pocket costs, fewer ancillary benefits like dental coverage and OTC allowances, smaller networks, and less freedom to see specialists at your own discretion.
My advice for today: Escape the unpredictability of Advantage Plans as well as the stress of shopping for a plan every year and move to a Supplement where you know there will always be little or no out of pocket medical costs, you will never lose access to doctors and hospitals, referrals aren’t neccessary to see a specialist, and you get the care your doctor orders immediately without the need of insurance company authorization.
Those who are having their Advantage Plan terminated are being granted a once in a lifetime opportunity known as “Guaranteed Issue” rights. These rights guarantee acceptance into a Supplement at a “Preferred Rate” regardless of current or previous health history. I recommend those who are presented this opportunity enroll in a Supplement if they can afford the premium.
Those who don’t have Guaranteed Issue rights, but are healthy enough to pass underwriting and can afford a Supplement should also enroll in one while they can. In over 40 states once you get sick while on an Advantage Plan and big bills start piling up, moving to a Supplement can become impossible.
