The Truth About Low-Cost Part D Plans

With the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period right around the corner, it’s important for those who have Supplements and need a Stand-Alone Part D prescription plan to be prepared to shop for a new plan.

Stand Alone Part D prescription drug plan companies stopped paying agents commissions in 2025. We no longer get paid to help people choose and enroll in these policies.

At The Health Insurance Store, we don’t care and still assist clients, do the research, recommend the best plan and then complete an application for enrollment. We also advise every client prior to each AEP on what plan will work best for the upcoming year.

However, most other agents no longer help people in the same way, which is very unfortunate because choosing a Part D plan can be very difficult.

I made a tutorial on how to shop for a plan on your own. You can click the link here to watch it. >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzQcsrfKz08&t=2595s

The most important advice I can give to those who need to choose a new plan next year is DO NOT CHOOSE ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE OUT OF FEAR THAT THE LOWER COST PLANS WON’T COVER EXPENSIVE DRUGS YOU MIGHT GET PRESCRIBED! For 2027, we are actually recommending the three least expensive plans on the market to 99% of our clients. The monthly premiums in 2027 for those plans will be $5 to $35.

When it comes to Part D coverage, less expensive doesn’t mean less coverage or a small number of covered drugs. It also doesn’t mean you will pay more out of pocket.

All plans have the same out of pocket limit of $2,400 regardless of premium. There are also regulations and protections for consumers on all Part D plans that ensure a minimum of two drugs are covered for every diagnosis. In addition there are regulations to get a drug covered immediately even if it’s not on the plan’s formulary (list of covered medications). If you needed an expensive drug for a disease such as cancer or another life-threatening diagnosis, there should be no instance where you couldn’t get a drug covered to treat it effectively using Medicare’s appeal processes.

We get involved with our clients whenever there is a prescription coverage or cost issue, helping ensure the drug can be accessed immediately. We also assist with filing appeals when necessary.
