I’ve Had My Supplement for Years—Even With the Rate Increases, Isn’t It Best to Stay Put?
Email:
There’s no question today. Instead, I want to print an email conversation I had with a client who is skeptical about changing Supplement (Medigap) companies for reasons he shouldn’t be. It’s far too common for people not to understand that Supplements are all created equal in every way except cost.
Below is Paul’s email to me after I made the determination that he could pass underwriting for a new company and save around $1,000 in 2026 for the exact same coverage he currently has.
Aaron, in line with your generalized mailing a couple of weeks ago, I am going to stay with my current Aetna Supplement rather than considering a change to a less expensive plan. I can afford it for the time being. I appreciate the concern expressed in the mailing.
My Response:
We're here to support whatever you choose to do, Paul. I want you to know that we always have your best interest in mind. When we offer advice, it's to protect you. It's not for any of our own financial interests.
I would like to remind you of a couple of facts regarding Supplements.
They are all created equal. You currently have Plan N with Aetna. Plan N with Cigna, AARP, New Era Life, Highmark, Humana, or the other 15 or so companies who sell them in your zip code, provide the exact same coverage and access to doctors and hospitals. No company ever makes decisions on what is covered. That is always determined by Medicare. All companies must follow CMS regulations and pay providers what they are told they owe and in a timely fashion. They can't dispute or delay those payments. The only difference between companies selling the same letter plan is cost.
If you can pass underwriting now, which we determined you can, I highly recommend getting away from Aetna while you’re healthy enough to do so because we anticipate these kinds of rate increases from them, 15% to 25%, every year moving forward. If you wait and are diagnosed with a condition that won't allow you to move to another company, you will find yourself in a tough position; pay $300, $400, $500 per month for your Aetna Supplement or move to an Advantage Plan which are not trending in a very good direction. Moving to a new Supplement company with much lower rates will buy you quite a number of years before your monthly premiums get to those benchmarks.
Paul wisely decided to make an appointment for me to answer any additional questions or concerns he has.
I want to make sure the message is clear to everyone who has a Supplement they enrolled in four or more years ago. You need to investigate moving to a new Supplement now. Stop overpaying for a name or a logo. Don’t let fear cost you thousands of dollars. Get the facts explained! We’ve been helping people for 18 years and only give advice based on what’s best for our clients.
No one who can pass underwriting should be on antiquated Supplement plans C or F! And very few should be on G either! They are overpriced and provide no value for the thousands per year in additional premiums!
Give the office a call, 724-603-3403, or email me personally, Aaron@GetYourBestPlan.com, if you would like to get a quote on a new Supplement letter or company. We can also pre-screen you for underwriting before submitting an application.
