Medicare Supplements, unlike Medicare Advantage Plans, can be changed all year round. YOU DO NOT NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THE ANNUAL ELECTION PERIOD TO MOVE TO ANOTHER SUPPLEMENT PLAN OR COMPANY!
This is extremely important to know because most Supplement companies, in 2026, are going to have their highest rate increases in the last 20 years.
AARP branded Supplements, just announced rate increases on Pennsylvania policies ranging from 10% to 25% that will go into effect July 1st. Other companies will also be announcing their rate increases soon, and I expect them to deliver similar bad news as Supplement companies continue to take on losses due to several market conditions.
Be advised that rate increases do not go into effect for everyone in July or January. Supplement premium increases occur on your policy’s anniversary date which can be any month of the year.
We are advising many people who are going to see large premium increases to change letter plans or companies. However, we don’t recommend waiting until they go into effect. My fear is those who can pass medical underwriting today, but choose to wait, could be diagnosed between now and then with a medical issue that will keep them from being approved for the lower priced plans. This is especially important for those who have Plans C, F, and G that are already much higher than Plan N. I’ve done the math. Based on just a 12% annual increase, those on Plan G who don’t change to Plan N will pay as much or more than $20,000 in premiums over the next 10 years. Those on C and F, closer to $40,000.
There’s a company with significantly lower rates that already had their 2026 increases go into effect who we believe has positioned themselves to withstand the turbulent Supplement market better over the next few years.
