Will I Still Be Fully Covered If I Change Medicare Supplement Companies?

Question:

Question from Terry: My husband and I just got a rate increase for our United Healthcare Plan G. His is now over $300/month and mine is almost $300.  I’m very skeptical about moving to another company because when I got cancer in 2017, my surgery and radiation were all paid for in full. I’m worried if something like that happens again, I might get tons of bills.

Answer:

Answer: There’s so much misinformation and lack of information when it comes to Medicare. I’ve been in the business since 2007, and I don’t think it will ever change. In fact, Medicare gets more and more confusing every year. Terry’s misguided concern that if she moves from one Supplement company to another, some of the same services might not be covered is one of the most common. Failure to understand the truth could cost her tens of thousands of dollars in premiums.

The only difference between Supplements companies selling the same letter plan is cost!

Let me make this clear once again; Supplements are all created equal. Supplement Plan G, regardless of the company that offers it, covers the same services and provides the same nationwide access to doctors and hospitals. All companies must pay claims as Medicare approves them, and in the same timely manner. In fact, doctors and hospitals don’t even bill Supplement companies; they bill Medicare who coordinates payment to medical providers to get them paid in full.

In addition, this holds true regardless of what letter plan you buy. Terry has Plan G. We recommend N quite often as well. G and N cover the exact same services, with the only difference between the two plans being miniscule. N has a $20 co-pay for a physician’s office visit and $50 at the Emergency Room while G does not. If Terry were to move to another company, buy either G or N, and need those same services; surgery, radiation, or others such as chemotherapy, a hospitalization, and more, they would all be paid for in full as well.

Moving to another Supplement company can save thousands per year!

I ran a quote for Terry and her husband, who are both 75 years old. They could remain on Plan G and move to another company with rates of $132 and $148 per month, half of what they are paying now. Or they could choose Plan N for $97 and $108 per month. Once approved, they can never get expensive bills for any Medicare covered service due to regulations on Supplement insurance companies.  When Medicare pays their share, Supplement companies, by law, must pay their portion, namely the 20% for Part B Medicare doesn’t pick up and the $1,700 Part A hospital deductible. Terry need not have any fear!

Medical Underwriting and what it pertains

Please be advised that medical underwriting is required to move from one company to another or even different letter plans within the same company. However, the process is simple and DOES NOT require any physical exam or blood work. There’s only a short questionnaire as well as a review of a Medical Information Bureau, which is a history of all the codes submitted by medical providers on your behalf to any health insurance company you’ve ever had.

We can do an underwriting pre-screen and get a very good idea if you can be approved for a Supplement with a lower rate.
